The calculator asks you to enter certain specific information, including nutrient data for both labeled and reference products (in grams), serving size as packaged and Reference Amount Customarily Consumed (RACC).
Limitations:
This calculator covers the majority of food products, but it is not valid for products intended for special populations (such as school lunches), non-packaged products, bacon, game meat or seafood.

Glossary:

Meal:
All three of the following are true: (1) the product weighs as least 10 oz. (283g) per labeled serving; (2) it contains at least 3 40-gram portions of food, or combinations of food, from 2 or more of the following 4 food groups: a) Bread, cereal, rice and pasta; b) fruits and vegetables; c) milk, yogurt and cheese; d) meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dry beans and nuts; and (3) it is represented as or is in a form commonly understood to be a breakfast, lunch, dinner or entree.

meat industry:
Meat and meat products derived from horses, mules and exotic animals (including antelope, bison, buffalo, deer, reindeer and elk) do not automatically fall under USDA jurisdiction; however, they are treated as USDA-regulated product if the processor obtains permission to produce them under USDA's voluntary meat inspection service.

Main Dish:
All three of the following are true: (1) the product weighs as least 6 oz. (170g) per labeled serving; (2) it contains at least 40 grams of food, or combinations of food, from 2 or more of the 4 food groups; and (3) it is represented as or is in a form commonly understood to be a main dish. Such representation may be made either by statements, photographs or vignettes.

meat:
"Meat" is defined as the edible muscle derived from cattle, sheep, swine, or goats, which is skeletal or which is found in the tongue, in the diaphragm, in the heart, or in the esophagus, with or without the accompanying and overlying fat, and the portions of the bone, skin, sinew, nerve and blood vessels which normally accompany the muscle from it in the process of dressing (see 9 CFR 301.2(rr)).

poultry:
"Poultry" is defined as edible skeletal muscle derived from a domesticated bird (chicken, turkey, duck, goose or guinea), with or without accompanying intramuscular or overlaying fat, bone or skin, nerve and blood vessels that are not separated from the muscle meat (see 9CFR 381.1(b)(40)). Ratite species (emu, ostrich, rhea) and birds not defined as poultry (water fowl, game birds, squab, etc.) do not automatically fall under USDA jurisdiction; however, if the processor opts to process them under voluntary USDA inspection, they are treated as poultry.
